Liptovský Ján

Liptovský Ján is located in the beautiful surroundings of the foothills of the Low Tatras at an altitude of 650 m.n.m. Liptovský Ján is the gateway to the Jánska valley and can flourish not only natural, but also cultural or historical wealth.

The winter season offers cross-country skiing, skiing, sledging, and of course a great skiing – Jasna ski resort, Ruzomberok Malino-Brdo, Opalisko Ski Center. During the summer, one of the most beautiful and longest valleys of the Low Tatras has a lot to offer: walking, hiking, cycling, photographic hobbies, trips, historical monuments, caves, swimming (thermal spring Kaďa, thermal swimming pool in Liptovsky Jan, Aquapark Tatralandia, Thermal park Besenova).

Since the village was in the past a country residence, lovers of history will appreciate the 17 preserved manor-houses and mansions originally from the 16th century. The early Gothic Church of St. John the Baptist from 1280 is also worth a visit. The decoration of the church represents a Gothic altar with the main statue of the Madonna from 1740 and a two hundred-year old original organ, which was constructed by Martinus Zorkovský from Kremnica. A rarity of the church is an ancient bell (genga) from 1576 placed in a small tower. There are three crypt spaces in the church. Research has shown that there are stairs leading to the underground corridors behind the main altar.

14 mineral and thermal springs in the southern outskirts of the village definitely deserve personal attention. The water is mineralized, bicarbonate – sulfuric, calcium – magnesium with a temperature of 14.8 to 29.3 degrees Celsius. It is suitable for the treatment of metabolic disorders, skin, rheumatic, female, stomach and intestinal diseases.

Ďumbier (2043 m)  + M.R.Stefanik chalet (Štefánička)

Easiest access point:  Liptovský Ján (blue, 3h50″/4h40″)

Ďumbier is the highest peak of the Low Tatras (2043 m, offshoot Štiavnica 2025 m) in the main ridge between Krúpova hoľa (1927 m) and Králička (1785 m). From the north, it appears as a massive alpine massif, falling over 500 m high walls, pillars and gutters into glacial boilers at the end of Bystrá and Ludárova valley. The milder southern slopes cover the fields of granite boulders. Mountain Chamois and Mountain Marmots inhabit the Northern boilers. Iron ores, gold and antimony were mined intensively in the past. The remains of this activity have so far been found almost in all valleys at the foot of Ďumbier. In the saddle between Dumbier and Rabbit, retreat fights between partisans and Germans took place during World War II. In the winter of 1944, monument to the fallen Partisans was built near the chalet M.R.Štefánika, in memory of these fights and the difficult passage of the Low Tatras. There is a very extensive circular view of all the mountains of central and Northern Slovakia from the top of Ďumbier.

Tourist lookout tower

The tourist lookout tower is located in Stráne, specifically above cemetery under the hill Kameničná (829 m.n.m.). The lookout tower is all-wooden, its shape and materials used are based on traditional Slovak architecture. The St. John’s Lookout Tower is approximately 700 m above sea level.

Stanišovská cave

Stanišovská cave is another beauty of Jánska Dolina. It is a complex of underground spaces that stretch about 100 km on both sides of the valley. The total number of caves and abysses in Jánská dolina is 142.

Stanišovská cave is the only year-round every day opened cave in Liptov. You will experience a perfect adventure while discovering the magical underground caves with guides. Walking along the walls, which have been shaped by water and mother nature into indescribable structures is simply a stunning experience. The headlamp will be given to every visitor before entry, and no special clothing or shoes are needed. An ideal destination for the whole family.

Demänovská Ice Cave

The Demänovská Ice Cave, a cave accessible to the public, is located on the right side of the Demänovská Valley a

nd below the northern slopes of the Low Tatras.. The attractive and sought-after ice cave is one of the first known caves in the world. The cave, which was already known in the Middle Ages, is the second largest of its kind in Slovakia. The first place belongs to the Dobšinská Ice Cave in the Slovak Paradise. Although the first record of the cave dates back to 1299, it was not open until the 19th century. The entrance to the cave lies at an altitude of 840 m, about 90 m above the bottom of the valley. It is accessible by a serpentine walkway from the parking lot. It is built on four floors with a total length of almost 2.5 km. The sightseeing route includes 850m long cave corridors (duration of the tour 45 minutes). The ice filling of the cave probably originated 400 to 500 years ago. The Demänovská Ice Cave is known for the bones of the cave bear findings, which were considered in the 18th century as dragon’s remains and therefore; they called it “Dragon Cave” accordingly. Ten species of bats live in the cave. Its lower part with ice drops and waterfalls is particularly charming. An educational trail leads to the Demänovská Ice Cave.
